I graduated from DeSales High School. Then there were 4 years at D’Youville College from which I emerged with a BS in Medical Technology, which means I work in a hospital lab. There have been a succession of those, first Buffalo General Hospital until Oct. of 1971. Then I moved to Honolulu and worked at Queen's Medical Center about 2 blocks from Iolani Palace (the only palace of a monarch on US soil) and stayed there until April of 1977. After coming back to the Mainland I spent some time in Gasport getting to know my family and friends again, traveling to several homes and places to reunite with them. Then I spent a few years working in several random places, until 1982 when my dad died and I went home to help my mother through the transition.
I began working at Lockport Memorial Hospital and in April of 1983 went to Mullane Motors to buy my first new car. I met a man...and after a reasonable length of time, married him. (He also sold me the car.) The sweet part of the story is that when I went to look at cars, I kept feeling as though we had met before. It wasn’t until after I had signed the papers that we realized that I had seen him working as a bartender at the King’s Butler in 1977 when Ritchie and I had stopped there one night when we were hanging out.
In any event, Dennis and I have 2 daughters, Bethany and Caitlin, who are now at SUNY Oswego, studying their little hearts out. Or so we hope. (And if you are paying attention, that’s ABCD Stabler.) This year we are empty nesters for the first time and, although we like each other, I really miss the kids.
I still work at LMH in the lab, Den still works at Mullane’s. We lost my mother in 1998 but have remained in Lockport and probably always will, although Den threatens a lot. He would love to be nearer better fishing areas but I'm not up to northern Minnesota.
2015 Update: Since our last reunion, there have been a lot of noteworthy changes in my life- and all of them seem
to fall on even years.
In 2010, our older daughter got married to a wonderful young man.
In 2012, our first grandchild, their daughter, Abby, arrived the day of the annual Roy-Hart September dinner. Thirteen days later, our second daughter brought to our family another fine son-in-law. In December of that year, after 29 years, I retired from Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport site. (Remember Lockport Memorial Hospital? No more!) One month later, I began my second career-- part-time Grandma and caregiver.
In 2014, Abby was joined, within a two-month period, by her twin brothers {Gavin and Sam) and her cousin, Tucker. My life is now controlled by the needs of our children and grandchildren. Fun, but exhausting.
Dennis and I are trying to maintain our "retired" time together, but there is definitely less of it at this point. He remains an avid fisherman, and when time permits, I still love gardening, needlecrafts and watercolor painting. When put like that, it sounds so quiet. How come it's not?
I look forward to seeing so many of you in September, and catching up again.
